Cabinet Approves Rs. 400 Mn Major Irrigation Tank Boundary Demarcation Project 📈

• Project Overview: The Cabinet of Ministers approved continuing a landmark project to install physical ground boundary posts along major tanks. Managed by the Department of Irrigation under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative, it aims to protect vital water sources from encroachers and land-use pressures. • Financial Allocation: Total Estimated Cost: Rs. 400 million spanning 2025–2028. Initial Allocation: Rs. 100 million released in 2025 to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation. • Progress & Key Targets: Completed: Demarcation and pillar placement are fully complete for 3 major tanks in Kandy, Kantale, and Tissa. Future Scope: 48 additional tanks approved by the Department of National Planning are scheduled for surveying, boundary stone installation, and tree planting. • Strategic Impact: Preserving tank boundaries directly supports paddy cultivation, agricultural productivity, and local water security by reversing catchment area loss.
