🇮🇳🇱🇰 Cabinet clears agreements for $ 450M Indian disaster recovery package
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved agreements to secure a US$ 450 million Indian assistance package to support Sri Lanka’s post-Cyclone Ditwah reconstruction efforts. • The Package: Comprises a US$ 350 million line of credit (divided into a US$ 250 million long-term facility and a US$ 100 million short-term facility) alongside a US$ 100 million grant. • Damage Context: Total reconstruction needs are estimated at US$ 3.5 billion, which includes US$ 2.1 billion in physical damage and US$ 1.4 billion in economic losses following the November 2025 cyclone. • Allocation: The funds will target recovery and development across critical sectors, specifically infrastructure, connectivity, health, education, housing, water supply, and disaster management. • Background: The broader assistance package follows initial relief under India's 'Operation Sarga Bandhu' and was finalized during the Indian External Affairs Minister's visit in December 2025. The proposal was submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
