🏢 CVU Colombo Forum 2026 Tackles High-Rise Safety & Resilience

Source

The Council on Vertical Urbanism (CVU) Sri Lanka Chapter hosted the Colombo Forum 2026, gathering local and international experts under the theme “Design to Survive: Tall Buildings in an Age of Global Instability” to address rising physical, technological, and geopolitical risks facing vertical urban centers like Colombo. • Key Industry Focus & Technical Highlights: • Urban Infrastructure & Planning: Stressed a 25-year forward-looking strategy to protect tall structures from evolving threats, including climate risks, geopolitical tensions, and drone hazards. Emphasized integrated 3D urban design. • Construction & Steel Systems: Experts noted composite steel systems dominate the world’s 100 tallest buildings. Reusing structural steel reduces embodied carbon emissions to near-zero (carrying just 1% of traditional steel production emissions)—crucial as structural floors account for ~70% of a building's embodied carbon. • Protective Engineering: Highlighted mathematical risk-based blast protection, emphasizing optimal perimeter defenses (e.g., 10-11m standoff distances offering a 6:1 benefit-to-cost ratio). • Key Milestones & Initiatives: • International Launch: Officially launched the IAPS Sri Lanka Chapter (led by Prof. Ranjith Dissanayake) to strengthen resilience against structural hazards, coastal threats, and cyclones. • Technical Standards: Unveiled technical manuals including the "Design Calculation Manual - Reinforced Concrete High-rise Building Design" to assist peer-reviewed local engineering, notably for Colombo Port City developments.
