• The initiative addresses the urgent need for more green spaces in Colombo, which a study shows has warmed by up to 4°C over the last two decades. • 'Grey2Green' is a national, citizen-powered movement by Dilmah Conservation and UN Global Compact Sri Lanka, inviting the public to convert concrete “grey” areas (rooftops, unused land, industrial sites) into thriving ecological spaces. • It is not a traditional tree-planting campaign but a long-term, data-driven process focusing on ecosystem management, science-based restoration, and community engagement. • Participants will receive training in urban forestry and ecology, replicating the success of the One Earth Urban Arboretum, which transformed an industrial waste dump into a green sanctuary. • The Central Environmental Authority supports urban greening as a national priority, and the initiative aligns with global sustainability goals (UN SDGs 11 & 13: Sustainable Cities and Climate Action).
