Govt. Prepared for Referendum on 22A Pending SC Ruling 📈
• Referendum Readiness: The Government is willing to hold a referendum if the Supreme Court determines it is required alongside a two-thirds parliamentary majority to pass the 22nd Amendment (22A), according to Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. The Court’s decision is expected by late September or October. • Judicial Reforms: Introduced in the public interest, 22A proposes increasing the retirement age of Supreme Court judges from 65 to 67 years and Court of Appeal judges from 63 to 65 years. The initiative originated as a Private Member’s proposal by MP Faiszer Musthapha under the previous administration before being formally presented by the current Government. • Parliamentary Engagement: The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) is scheduled to brief MPs today on 22A and related concerns regarding vacancies in the superior courts, following a request by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
