• Project Overview: Under the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, the "Greenway" initiative aims to plant one million trees along Class A and Class B roads island-wide to reduce air pollution, regulate urban temperatures, and enhance aesthetic appeal. • Industrial & Urban Scope: • Focuses on urban centers including Colombo, Gampaha, Kurunegala, and Galle. • Targets major industrial zones such as Katunayake, Biyagama, and Seethawaka to absorb pollutants naturally. • Key Sectors & Multi-Agency Support: • Involves multi-sectoral collaboration across state entities, public communities, school networks, private entrepreneurs, and armed forces. • Broad ecosystem support includes the Department of Forest Conservation, Road Development Authority, Department of National Botanic Gardens, and agriculture sector agencies like the Department of Export Agriculture and Department of Minor Export Crops. • Eco-zone specific species selected include Murutha, Na, Kumbuk, Mee, Goraka, and fruit-bearing trees like Jackfruit and Mango, paired with protective guard mesh for sustained growth.
