✈️ Hong Kong Airport Launches New Terminal 2 to Boost Global Hub Status
The Terminal 2 (T2) at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) successfully commenced operations on May 27, marking a major milestone in expanding its capacity and technology integration. While focused on Hong Kong, the development highlights global benchmarks in logistics, aviation infrastructure, and automation—sectors highly relevant to Sri Lanka’s own hub aspirations. • Overall Performance & Scale: HKIA handled 61 million passenger trips in 2025, reflecting a 15% YoY growth. The new T2 spans 300,000 square metres and is designed to serve both departing and arriving passengers. • Cargo Leadership: HKIA maintained its position as the world's busiest air cargo airport for the 15th time since 2010, handling 5.07 million tons of cargo last year. • Technology & Automation: The terminal features 68 express self-bag drop counters and 58 smart check-in kiosks. A custom in-house self-check-in system processes passengers in just 45 seconds, aiming for full automation to enhance passenger experience and reduce labour dependencies. • Strategic Alignment: The expansion aligns with regional development plans, focusing on enhancing intermodal connectivity within the Greater Bay Area and advancing "Airport City" initiatives.
