Lanka Metro Transit (LMT) Launch Signals Strategic Shift in Sri Lanka Transport Infrastructure 📈
• Overview & Fleet Growth: Approved by Cabinet in 2025 as a subsidiary of the Sri Lanka Transport Board, LMT expanded rapidly from an April 2026 pilot of 10 low-floor, air-conditioned buses to over 100 Foton units, scaling operations from 2 initial routes (Makumbura–Fort and Makumbura–Kadawatha) to 7 routes reaching beyond Colombo. • Economic Transport Impact: Inadequate transport infrastructure creates a material drag on national output. Following Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025—which caused US$ 4.1 Bn in direct physical losses—infrastructure sustained US$ 1.735 Bn in damage, disrupting track access across 1,115 km out of 1,593 km of rail lines and severely impeding worker access and tourism earnings. • System Integration Focus: LMT is positioned as a connective layer to integrate existing passenger modes, linking buses, railways, and first-and-last-mile three-wheelers via central hubs like Makumbura, Kadawatha, and Borella to improve urban labor productivity.
