🚘 National Dialogue Urged on 4x4 Vehicle Modification Regulations
Sri Lanka’s 4x4 community is calling on the Government and the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT/RMV) to establish a balanced, evidence-based regulatory framework for modified vehicles, balancing road safety with essential operational utility. • Socio-Economic & Emergency Contributions: • Disaster Relief & Response: Volunteer 4x4 groups, including the Ironman 4x4 Emergency Response Team, provide critical aid, medical transport, and search-and-rescue support during natural disasters like floods and landslides. • Tourism & Economy: Professionally modified vehicles enable safe access to adventure tourism spots, eco-trails, and wildlife reserves, supporting rural businesses. • Motorsport & Youth Development: Essential for track safety and vehicle extraction in off-road racing while promoting discipline and technical skills among youth. • Community Proposals for New Regulations: • Distinguish clearly between unsafe/cosmetic alterations and functional, professionally fitted safety equipment (e.g., winches, snorkels, recovery gear, upgraded suspension). • Establish clear technical guidelines alongside an official inspection and certification system rather than outright bans or exemptions.
