Pelwatte Dairy Industries Limited, through its subsidiary Pelwatte Foods (Pvt) Ltd, has signed an agreement with the Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka to establish a new Greenfield Liquid Milk Manufacturing Facility (Phase 01) at its Kurunegala plant. • Investment Details & Timeline: The project is valued at approximately Rs. 1.86 billion. Construction is scheduled to commence in July 2026, with commercial operations targeted for July 2027. • Product Focus: The highly automated plant will produce liquid milk and value-added flavored milk beverages (including chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and iced coffee), aiming to reduce dependency on imported dairy products. • Economic & Social Impact: While advanced automation will limit direct job creation, the project is expected to create indirect value across the dairy supply chain by increasing demand for locally sourced raw milk. • Addressing National Nutrition: The expansion directly targets Sri Lanka's current public health challenges. National data highlights that 15.9%–18% of infants are born underweight, 34.6% of women of reproductive age suffer from anaemia, and 17% of children under five face stunting. The facility aims to strengthen food security and provide accessible, protein-rich options for vulnerable groups.
