🚨 Police Alert: New Digital APK Scam Targeting Bank Accounts

Source

The Sri Lanka Police have issued an urgent public warning regarding a sophisticated financial fraud operation conducted via mobile messaging platforms. • The Tactic: Scammers send malicious .apk files through WhatsApp and Telegram. These files are disguised as routine documents such as wedding invitations, electricity bills, or prize notifications to deceive users into installing malware. • The Threat: Once installed, the malware grants hackers remote control over the device's screen and provides access to SMS messages. This allows attackers to intercept One-Time Passwords (OTPs) and gain unauthorized access to online banking systems. • Security Precautions: Do not download or open any .apk files from unknown or suspicious sources. Disable the "Install Unknown Apps" feature in mobile security settings. Download applications exclusively from trusted stores like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. • Action Plan: Victims should immediately secure their bank accounts and report incidents to the Computer Crimes Investigation Division of the CID or the nearest police station.
