President Anura Kumara Dissanayake officially launched the construction of the HayWind wind power project in Mannar today, marking a milestone in Sri Lanka's transition toward net-zero emissions by 2050. ⢠Project Scope: Developed by Hayleys Fentons, the 50MW plant will feature 10 turbines, generating an estimated 207 million kWh annually. ⢠Cost Efficiency: The project sets a record for the lowest wind power tariff in Sri Lanka at US$ 0.0465 per unit (approx. LKR 14.37). ⢠Timeline: Construction is scheduled for completion by March 2027. ⢠Renewable Energy Targets: Sri Lanka is significantly outpacing its green energy goals. For the 2025ā2029 period, the government has secured agreements for 12,789.5 MW, exceeding the original plan of 9,759 MW. ⢠Regional Impact: Parallel to the energy infrastructure, the government is investing nearly Rs. 10 million in Mannar for canal dredging, flood mitigation, safe drinking water for 200 households, and smart classrooms.
