The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) has issued a critical warning regarding the surge in AI-generated deepfake scams targeting the public. • Fraud Surge: Cyber-related financial fraud complaints have reached 360 this year. • Deceptive Tactics: Scammers are utilizing deepfake videos featuring the President, Prime Minister, and prominent public figures to promote fraudulent investment schemes promising unrealistic returns. • Broader Threats: Beyond finance, AI-generated content is being used to disseminate false information regarding employment, economic policy, and taxes. • Vulnerable Groups: Of the reported cases, 14 involved children, signaling rising risks for minors online. • Account Security: 40 complaints were recorded specifically regarding hacked WhatsApp accounts, highlighting the prevalence of social media-based cyber attacks.
