The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) has introduced a specialized training model to transition the tourism sector from passive sightseeing to immersive, knowledge-based engagement. • Program Overview: The "National Tourist Interpreter" program is a three-month course focusing on field exposure. It targets academics and professionals to provide deeper narratives on Sri Lanka’s ecological systems, cultural heritage, and community livelihoods. • Strategic Objectives: Sustainability: Promotes responsible visitor behavior and long-term conservation of biodiversity-rich and culturally significant sites. Value Addition: Aims to attract high-level researchers and specialists to provide experience-based services, driving higher economic returns. Conservation: Interpreters will communicate critical issues regarding species conservation, climate risks, and heritage preservation. • Certification & Licensing: Graduates receive a "National Tourist Interpreter Licence" issued by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). Includes a digital certification; assessment is based on practical competencies rather than a rigid curriculum. This initiative marks a shift toward professionalizing hospitality and destination management to meet global demand for educational and immersive travel experiences.
