Source

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector achieved pre-pandemic recovery in volume, but faces declining foreign exchange yield per visitor, driven by shifting traveler demographics and spending patterns. • Overall Performance & Revenue Disconnect: • 2025 arrivals grew by 15.1% YoY to a record 2.36 Mn visitors (vs. 2.33 Mn in 2018). • 2025 tourism earnings rose just 1.6% YoY to US$ 3.22 Bn—over US$ 1.00 Bn lower than 2018 levels (US$ 4.38 Bn). • Average spending per tourist dropped 12% YoY to US$ 1,363, while daily spending fell 14% YoY to US$ 148. • H1 2026 earnings surpassed US$ 1.50 Bn with arrivals over 1.50 Mn by August 2026. • Shift in Visitor Profile & Behavior: • SLTDA-MDF survey highlights 62% of visitors travel independently, averaging US$ 148/day vs. package travelers at US$ 215/day (45% higher spending). • Demographics lean toward younger, price-conscious travelers: 46% aged 20–35, 70% university graduates, 46% booking via OTAs. • Beaches, Galle, Ella, and Sigiriya remain top destinations, causing localized infrastructure and carrying capacity strain. • Key Source Markets: • India remains the largest source market, followed by the UK, Russia, China, Germany, and France. • Sector positioning requires moving from volume-led arrival targets to high-yield segments like wellness, luxury, and premium experiential travel.
