Sri Lanka Universities Awarded €110,000 EU Grant to Address Plastic Waste 📈

• Grant & Funding: The EU-funded CIRCULAR project has provided 3 research grants totaling € 110,000 to target single-use plastic waste across Sri Lanka’s food & beverage supply chains. • Academic Partners: Research will be spearheaded by the University of Ruhuna (Faculty of Agriculture) alongside the University of Kelaniya (Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Computing). • Regional Focus: Studies will analyze plastic usage, flows, and public health/environmental impacts across the Colombo and Galle districts. • Strategic Goal: Addresses current data gaps to enable evidence-based policymaking, resource efficiency, and circular economy practices in packaging & waste management. • Project Framework: CIRCULAR is a 3-year initiative funded by the EU and partially co-funded by Germany’s BMZ, implemented jointly by Expertise France, FAO, and GIZ.
