Sri Lanka has launched a national initiative to integrate Artificial Intelligence and digital transformation across all state universities, aligning higher education with the country's broader digital economy goals. • National Policy & Strategy: Implementation of the UGC-approved National AI Policy Framework (adopted June 24, 2026) under a 3-year plan spanning 2026–2029. • Deadline for Universities: All state universities are targeted to formulate institutional AI policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) by December 31, 2026. • Core Focus Areas: Shift universities from consumers to developers of local technology, strengthen compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act, enhance cybersecurity, and track progress using the AI Maturity Index (AIMI). • Infrastructure Support: Plan to provide shared digital infrastructure and LMS systems to support under-resourced state universities. • Key Sectors: Drives national integration for the ICT/BPM sector and higher education, directly strengthening local capacity for digital economic growth.
