Sri Lanka Weather Alert: Indirect Impact from Intensifying Cyclone Arnab 🌧️⚓
Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has issued severe weather and marine advisories as Cyclonic Storm Arnab intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. While no direct landfall is expected on the island, indirect atmospheric disturbances will bring heavy rainfall and hazardous sea conditions across several regions over a three-day period. • Weather Overview & Landfall: The deep depression over the east-central and southeast Bay of Bengal developed into Cyclonic Storm Arnab and is projected to strengthen into a severe cyclone before tracking toward the Indian coast for landfall on October 28. • Regional Impact & Rainfall: Significant heavy downpours exceeding 100 mm are expected across key agricultural and economic zones, specifically in the Southern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Uva provinces, along with parts of the North Western province. • Maritime & Fisheries Red Alert: A red warning has been issued for naval and multi-day fishing communities operating in the Bay of Bengal (latitudes 10N–20N, longitudes 80E–95E). Authorities urge all vessels to refrain from venturing into deep and shallow sea areas and advise active vessels to evacuate immediately due to wind speeds reaching 80–100 km/h and wave heights up to 4.0 meters.
