🌾 Sri Lankan Farmers Stage Widespread Protests Over Paddy Pricing Crisis

Source

• Widespread Agitation: Farmers across the North Central, Eastern, Kurunegala, and Giruwa Pattu regions are protesting against the government. A network of 19,600 agrarian organisations has warned of mobilizing up to 200,000 farmers to Colombo if their grievances remain unresolved. • Pricing Discrepancies: According to HARTI, the average production cost of paddy is Rs. 137/kg, with actual farmgate prices varying from Rs. 96/kg (Ampara/Embilipitiya) to Rs. 162.80/kg (Kalawewa). However, government procurement prices are capped lower at Rs. 120/kg for Nadu and Rs. 130/kg for Samba, failing to cover average costs (only Keeri Samba at Rs. 140/kg exceeds it). • Key Cost Drivers: Costs are rising due to escalating prices of imported inputs, mirroring the structural dependency seen in the apparel & textiles sector. Additionally, the "urbanisation" of rural lifestyles has significantly expanded household expenses, narrowing farmer margins. • Sector Contagion: Similar input cost pressures are squeezing potato cultivators and small tea growers, raising concerns that the current agriculture crisis could spread beyond the paddy sector.
