š Tragic Loss of Iconic Tusker Kawantissa Highlights Tourism & HEC Crisis
Sri Lanka lost one of its most recognizable wild tuskers, Kawantissa, after he was fatally shot in the ongoing human-elephant conflict (HEC). Beyond the cultural loss, the killing impacts the country's wildlife tourism sector and local economies. ⢠Economic & Tourism Impact: Iconic wildlife like Kawantissa directly drives wildlife tourism, generating revenue for local communities and supporting rural livelihoods. ⢠The Crisis in Numbers: ⢠National wild elephant population is estimated at ~7,500. ⢠Hundreds of elephants die annually from gunshots, explosives, electrocution, and train collisions due to severe habitat fragmentation. ⢠Policy & Action Required: Urgent implementation of the 2020 National Action Plan for Mitigation of Human-Elephant Conflict is needed, focusing on protecting elephant corridors, science-based coexistence, and supporting rural farming communities.
