📈 US$5.8 Mn Kunming Fund Boosts SL Biosecurity & Agrifood Systems
• The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has helped seven developing countries, including Sri Lanka, secure a total of US$ 5.8 million in financing from the Kunming Biodiversity Fund (KBF). • The funding aims to integrate biodiversity into agrifood systems and drive action under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). • Sri Lanka's specific project is focused on the "Prevention and control of invasive alien species for enhanced biosecurity". • Key activities for the Sri Lankan initiative include: strengthening national capacity, improving border controls, training frontline teams, and engaging communities in removal efforts and awareness campaigns. • Other recipient countries include Madagascar, Uganda, Mexico, Cook Islands, Nepal, and Türkiye, with projects targeting sustainable agriculture, ecosystem protection, and knowledge management. • The KBF, launched by China in 2021, is instrumental in helping developing countries achieve global biodiversity goals through sustainable agriculture.
